Let him promote Christianity in his paper, see what type of attention and grade he receives, and then we will know the answer.

For some reason, I was looking at the U.S. Constitution last night on line. It states that the government shall not establish a religion. The forefathers intended for the government to stay clear of this allowing the people to choose and pracitce their own religion.

I do believe we have freedom of religion in this country. I think we only have to look to the middle East to decide if we do. I don't think we could start a Christian church in most Middle Eastern countries, China and many other parts of the world. You don't know what you have until you travel to these 3rd world countries and discover the darkness. Just think about the women in the Muslium countries. They can't show their faces in public, they share their husbands with several other wives, they will probable never drive a car. If fact, probably won't ever go to the Walmart.....It is a much different life than the U.S. There are a billion people in the Middle East. 60% are women. That means 600,000,000 women are there who are living in this situation and probably don't know they are living a deprived life.

I suppose that's why I haven't answered. It is a question that asks for an answer in absolute terms, but on a topic that is truly relative. When you compare the US to those Asian or Middle Eastern nations that suppress Christianity, of course we are more free. That presupposes some freedom.

On the flip side, though, I would emphasize that religion in America, particularly Christianity, also demands a certain worship of government - a government that especially is hostile to religion. So, "freedom", in that sense, is illusory.

That's my opinion.
Human government bears the same relation to hell as the church bears to heaven. (David Lipscomb, On Civil Government, 72).

For the one who has truly received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, no government, no prison, no chains can enslave his faith and belief, therefore he is free.

To practice, celebrate and share that faith openly is something entirely different. To that degree we still have freedom in this country, especially if compared, as has been, to others countries around the world.

I leave tonight for Burma and China and what I draw from many of the great christians I have met from these places is that persecuton does not inhibit ones faith, but only serves as challenges to allow the true Power of the Cross and the Blood of Christ to be made manifest through our lives.
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.

Perhaps freedom to worship is not really a threat here in the U.S. What I see coming is a general malase or apathy toward religion. Our society seems so complacent and does not see to want to include the Lord in their lives. Many factors contribute to this but humanism is a major player. I was listening to the radio yesterday and a song by Toby Keith called American Rider come on. It talks about how our society is changing. The ozone getting smaller, other environmental changes and then he said "Jesus getting smaller". Well, I am afraid that he is right that Americans are giving Jesus a smaller part of their lives. A grave mistake but we seem to be asleep at the wheel on this. I don't want to believe this but as I look around our city, I see more and more churches disappearing, dying out and many struggling to stay alive. So maybe we should be more concerned about apathy rather than freedoms being lost...........

We are all free to venerate our government, constitution, Founding Fathers, military, and "freedom." We're also allowed to hold whatever cute little beliefs make us happy so long as they do not interfere with our worship of the State.
For the truth that lies at the heart of theology is not something there to be discovered, but something, or rather someone, to whom we must surrender. The mystery of faith is not ultimately something that invites our questioning, but something that questions us.
Andrew Louth, Discerning the Mystery

Penny, help me out here. :) Did you say your son does not believe in God? What his his age? Have grade is he in? Just trying to have a frame of reference. Has he come to not believe in God or has this always been the case? thanks

I was doing some work in a customers home once and the subject of religion and Jesus was brought up, she claimed to be a Christian herself but then said that she wouldn't "push" Jesus or Christianity on her young kids. (they were probably 3 or 4) that she would wait until they were grown and let them make there own decisions. I felt terribly bad for the huge disadvantage she was bring upon her children. The bible tells us to raise our kids up in the ways of the Lord. It is our responsibly to teach and groom them so they might have a chance.....trust me, the enemy is definitely working on our kids to sway them in his direction!

God bless and good luck
