Are Christians bad tippers?

I know we've beaten this dead horse into the ground but there's another discussion going at New Man. I thought I'd invite you to weigh in if you want:

I worked in the industry...

Postby Poimen » August 20th, 2009, 10:23 am

I worked in food service for 6 years, and my personal standard for tipping is 10 %. Whether it's the norm or not, it is a fair percentage. If they give outstanding service I will add to it. If they give poor service I will lessen it.

If in a 8 hour shift an average of 12 tickets at $50.00 is the normal business served for a waiter/waitress then the total average tip would be $60.00. I've worked many a day for less than $60.00 per day in Construction/Remodel work. Then add to it the base pay (per hour) and they could easily be making between $75 and $100 a shift -- even if they are splitting tips, maybe more.

A 20% tip is so far out of our means as a norm that eating out would be virtually impossible. And that would be true for most everyone I know. A little in hand is better than no customers at all, no?

I don't mean to sound cheap -- maybe I/we in this part of Alabama are poorer than I realized. But the supposed 20% industry norm is just not a reality here -- for the consumer or the staff. *shrugs*

My wife and I were at a really nice resturant recently. The waiter started out very attentive. Then a couple of men came in and sat at a taple in the same section. They began ordering drinks, then the bottles of wine and so on. Well it was as if we had vanished.

I know the bar bill was adding up quickly for this other table and that was were the waiter focused his time and energy.

When I paid the bill, I paid the bill only. The waiter did not receive one penny from me.

I tip a minimum of 10% as a rule. But as Poimen mentioned, I will also go way beyond if treated rightly, and will not give one penny if treated poorly. BTW I will not hold it against the waiter/waitress if the cook screws up. Its not their fault. I just won't go back there anymore.

I always thought 15% was normal.

I will leave 20% because it is easier to figure out in my head the tip amount :)

Christians are, as a group, lousy tippers. They should be the BEST tippers.

I generally tip 18% for average to good service, 20% for extra effort. I don't tip at fast food places... only for sit-down, table-service restaurants. (I toss in any change from the sale into the Starbux tip jar, but that is not a real "tip" as in percentage of the tab.)

Not only do I tip, I am nice to servers, and don't treat them badly even if they mess up an order.

(At the risk of being sexist, I have observed that women are often more demanding of servers and more harsh in their criticism of servers who make mistakes than men are.)

That's a pretty nice restaurant you're eating at that has an average $50 check. At Cracker Barrel the average is between $8 and $9 per person (can't remember exactly) and probably 70% of our business consists of parties of 3 or less. The minimum wage for people who get tips has gone up $0.12 since 1985 and now stands at the princely sum of $2.13 per hour.
Honestly, I don't let the individual tips get to me one way or the other as long as my guests are civil (of course that's easy to say now that I have a full time job, too). Some of my favorite guests are very poor tippers but they are understanding and forgiving if something goes wrong
and they really seem to care about me as a person.

I've begun seeing suggested calculations on receipts for $22-25%, which is just ridiculous.

yeah, that is alot.

I just double the tax. Tax rate is here 9.5% so that is nearly 20% tip which I feel is more than fair.

yeah, such is life.

My boys now know to take 1 extra dollar for every $10 they plan on spending.

As far as tipping Starbux, I figure they get enough of my money when I pay an outrageous amount for a cup of coffee........ now the bikini-barista stands are a different story...

Well, we are a family of five. :P
Add an appetizer and/or desert and 50 is an easy hit for us. But even when just my wife and I eat out It is generally $40 -60 a meal. Of course we are usually eating at a nicer place when we do that. But, it is what it is.

everyone I talk to about it in the Midwest, it's 10% standard, and if there is exceptional service, then it might double. and if it is less than acceptable, then it is nothing. However, when I am charged a tip, then there is nothing extra given, and no keeping the change or any of that - I want every penny back. they just missed out on a potential 20%.

I was at a place a couple months back and there was a group of Christians eating there. I know they were Christians, because before they prayed, one of them stood up and prayed over the food, in a loud and, in my opinion, rude - manner. In any case, when they were done, i saw lots of people leaving tips. I don't know what the bill was, but there was a substantial amount of tipping.

However, and here's the kicker... remember the guy I mentioned that prayed? after everyone left, he came back to the table and picked his "tip" (it was a lot more than 20%, probably), and put it in his pocket and left. :(
Thanks, Brent "RamboPreacher" Hoefling

We eat often at Sweet Tomatoes, which is a salad bar restaurant. Most times, we don't see anyone but people busing the tables. But a few times, minutes before we're leaving, one of those busgirls will come up and be all chatty. Very obvious. We always leave a dollar a person even though most times they've done nothing. But I sure don't feel bad when we've found ourselves without cash, either.
