The literal temple was built, destroyed and rebuilt. All of that was prophecy of the Church, the spiritual temple, built according to the pattern. It was established in the early church, being built according to the pattern which was shown to Moses on the Mount (Ex. 25:40), and which David had given to Solomon (1 Chron. 28:11), and which was shown to John in his vision (Rev. 4).
It was built, and destroyed after that greivous wolves had entered in and turned the grace of God into lasciviousness. But, according to the prophecies, it will be restored (as was the natural temple), but this time among the Gentiles (even as the second temple was built by the decree of gentile kings).
“Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood” (Acts 15:14-20).
While the temple was still standing, God honored it, even though he had rejected the priests and had placed his disciples over the stewardship of the Word of God. Still they had to go to the temple. After its destruction in 70 A.D. that all changed.
No, try as they might, I don't think that there will be a restored temple in Jerusalem. As Gerald said, though, even IF it were to happen, it would not be accepted. It is the resoration of the spiritual house, built according to the pattern, that we should all be anxiously awaiting today.
