medical advice

Postby Full Quiver » January 25th, 2009, 3:52 pm

For a few days now I have had a horrible cough. I was treating it with Delsym. Yesterday I started taking 12 hour Mucinex for chest congestion which included an expectorant. I am continuing with the Delsym for a cough suppressant. I am sucking on Hall's cough drops almost constantly as well. I had 2 ear infections yesterday and applied Ciprodex for that which is an anti-biotic and steroid. Not sure if the infections are gone or not.

My cough is driving Wen mad. It gets really severe. The Mucinex breaks up the mucus and you cough it up systematically. Then you are able to either spit it out or swallow it. It's just non stop. What can I do?

I am headed up to take yet another hot shower ans eat some hot soup. Other than that I am at the mercy of this cold or whatever it is.

I will say Mucinex kicks the snot out of a congested chest.

Wen's about to throw me out so please help.

Go to the ER. You are probably in Pneumonia. You need medical help. I know, I have been there lately.

I'm going to start charging August!  The mucinex is doing exactly what it is suppose to do, break it up and then you cough. All that is natural response. You can't be diagnosed without listening to your lungs and looking at your eyes ears nose and throat. Pneumonia can only be diagnosed by listening and chest xray. There is an upper respiratory infection making the rounds, that may be it as well. Better cough suppressants are only available by prescription. Vicks vaporub is a cough suppressant, and works for some folks. There is a folk remedy that says to rub it on your feet and put on socks before going to bed. It worked for me for a while, but I had to go to the doctor eventually. It was comforting though.

Danny,
Why are you taking both a cough suppressant and an expectorant? They will try to offset each other, one tries to thin the mucus down to make it easier to cough up, while the other tries to prevent you from coughing. Here's a couple of suggestions. Drink hot tea (preferably a green tea) with honey and lemon. Try laying on your stomach with the top half of your body (your chest) draped over the side of the bed, this will allow gravity to help drain your lungs. While you are laying like this, if Wendy could do "chest percussion" on you it will help break up the mucus. Chest percussion is simply having someone cup their hands and then "clap" on your back, if it is done right it should not some like a slap but have a more hollow sound. I hope that you get to feeling better.

I've done the Vaporub on the soles of your feet at night. It works and it's not only soothing, but softens your feet! ;)

There is a prescription cough medicine called pearls***** or something....They are about the size of your little finger nail and look like vitamin E capsules...It's a miracle drug for coughing...

They are called Tessalon Pearls. I don't have much success with those for my patients and for myself. I have used them when I had to work and they worked alright. If your goal is getting sleep, any cough meds with codeine are the best.

I called my doc today, went in, and they said I am probably out of the woods. They wrote a script for an antibiotic just in case I am not better by Wednesday. Also I was given the Tessalon. I am supposed to take it three times a day. No luck so far.

TW, I wonder the same thing about the cough suppressant and the expectorant. Mucinex actually has both believe it or not. I bought the one type Mucinex that didn't because I already had the Delsym and didn't see the need to pay the extra money for it in Mucinex.

Thanks for all the FREE advice guys! :D
