I dont think someone should be denied communion based on political party affiliation.

Agreed. I would also wonder if there were not any things in the Republican party platform or positions that McCain held that violated church teachings. Does supporting a war that the church labeled "unjust" not a violation of church teachings? Is being pro-choice a greater evil than supporting and waging unjust war? If so, then why not officially declare them "God's party" in America?

Maybe we can change the Democratic and Republican mascots to this:

Democrats= Goats
Republicans= Sheep

At least then it would be biblical! :shock:

I think it is the most non-hypocritical move the Catholic church made in years. They have established where the official Catholic line is drawn, and said "this far and no farther! If you prefer Obama's line, go to him for your communion, you obviously don't respect ours." Good on them.
Why is it that bad decisions seem to make to most interesting testimonies?

Agreed!

Except of course this was a single priest and not an edict from the Vatican.

No communion for Obama supporters

Postby Dr. Ron » November 14th, 2008, 11:48 am

Vande,
You are so very right about the catholic church. Those who are members know that communion not being served is reserved for people who violate the tenents of the church.

Holy Communion in the Catholic church isn't like ours in the protestant churches. We kinda just do this and "gloss over" our concience with God.
They believe in the eucharist, It is indeed the blood and body of our Lord. It would be a sacriledge to take Holy Communion after having "knowingly" approving and being aligned with abortion and gay rights. It is called "abomination" in their view.

I refer to my comments on what a christian should be concerned about when voting.....seems the "mother church" agrees with me...or I with her.

That is ultimately where we all have to come to......draw a line in the sand and say " This is it"! I wll proceed no further. End of story.

I agree. but it reads that it is because of supporting abortion mentality, not partisanship.

wait? so are you saying that Eucharist/communion brings salvation? or establishes whether someone has salvation or not?

Reductio ad absurdum

You are working from the position that life is so compartmentalized that one's Theological views do not inform one's political views? Let's take that to the extreme to see how that logic holds up:

If you knew (KNEW) beyond any shadow of a doubt that a political candidate was evil incarnate... there was a validated, verified video broadcast of that candidate molesting small children, smothering an elderly nursing home patient, splashing acid in the face of a baby -- whatever is the most evil thing you can conjure up... and it was just a fact, would a vote for that person be a sinful act in your view?

If so, we are merely debating the details.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

Don't ask inconvenient questions. Besides, that's an easy one: God doesn't mind American war.

I know of anti-abortion people who became Democrats this year and voted for Obama. They believed that some far-reacing actions of the Republican Party under Bush were sinful, that many of Obama's policies were more godly than what has been done under the banner of capitalism and nationalism in the last eight years. They believe that they will have more of an influence regarding abortion from within the Democratic Party than outside it.

Why would a Christian ever vote for Mitt Romney? Isn't the identity of God more important than a billion babies?

I don't mind question, convenient or inconvenient.

We are trying to determine whether one's morality/Theology affects one's vote and, conversely, whether one's vote is indicative of one's morality/Theology.

It's funny how any time that legitimate question is asked, the knee-jerk response is to point out the perceived moral failings of whichever party is most disliked... unjust war/abortion? Economic disparity/promotion of perversion? Capitalism/Socialism? Are all of these moral equivalents? Is it possible to have a theoretical discussion that doesn't descend into a partisan sandbox fight?
