Do you TRUST your backup?

Postby MacUser » March 13th, 2008, 5:21 am

Mac user puts faith in Apple / Time Machine to truly awesome use
http://www.thecleverest.com/blog/373

Mike Solomon, a New York City based graphic designer, has put his Mac and Time Machine to innovative use. When faced with the issue of editing a project that required 20 gigs of space on his hard drive, which had but 10 gigs of space remaining, he put his faith in Apple on the line:

So what did I do? I did what any Mac user would do - I deleted my entire iTunes music folder. It cleared up about 65 gigs of space, and I was able to edit the video and all was well. Then when I got back home I restored all the files with Time Machine, which had automatically backed everything up.
I’d be pretty darn nervous about deleting 65 gigs of music without manually backing everything up on a hard drive

Cool, a Hackintosh!!

How's it doing? I've thought about doing a laptop with the Hackintosh setup but haven't had the guts to try it.

Sure do. He's about 6' 2", 225 or so, crazy about me and has been known to take mentally ill Messiah wannabes outta places when necessary.

Here are the specs:

ASUS motherboard
500 GB SATA hard drive (350 of it dedicated to the OSX partition)
nVidia GeForce 7300
2 GB RAM
Intel Integrated Audio
Linksys Wireless Card

The audio and wireless are working perfectly fine. Audio is built in and required a hack to work, wireless worked out of the box and was reported as an AirPort Card. The computer reports as a Mac Pro in my system profiler.

I am running iLife 08, iWork 08, Final Cut Studio 3 with no problems. Photos to follow, I will link to them on my website after I snap a few shots momentarily.

my documents consolidated and replicated. backups are live and continuous. :) when I am off-line of my network at home, local my documnts are used. when I go online it automatically synchronizes and primary source becomes the online folder automatically and with no user intervention. so you might say that my backup is my live files and vice versa.

on my thumb drive, I have to manually sync it to the backup on my network at home, but is essentially the same, as sometimes I work on the "backup" files adding, modifying etc, and then sync to thumb drive, and vice versa. (BTW - thumb drive is encrypted).

Wow. A virus free PC. That's a first.

Thanks for the photos! Keep us updated on this and how it runs. Give us some links to the sw you used and hacks you used to get it up to snuff.

hay now. all my systems are virus free. (though honestly, I am not sure how "normal" people can do it, since MS OS's are so tremendously more popular than the mac OS's, and thus; are more vulnerable to the malicious users)
and yes, YR, I glances, but don't get it. how is your husband (I assume that's wbhat is in reference), considered a "backup", even outside of geekdom? are you not co-equals, peers, help-meets for eachother? :) what am I missing?

Take a look at TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.. if you haven't. It's solid backup plan for the non geeks here running a mac.

yup. on-button external hard drive backups have been around for a long time for PC's. In my opinion, if you don't have a home network with other resources, something like this is a must-have.
