Takin' the Youth to hOOters

Postby Steve » February 27th, 2006, 12:00 pm

OK, boys and girls, since we are talking a lot about standards these days, I thought I would bring this one up! Discuss...
The Bible calls children a blessing and debt a curse, but in our culture we apply for curses and reject blessings.

Oh good grief, Steve. Apples and oranges, dude.

I don't even take my family/husband to Hooters. And it isn't as much because of the dress as how they intentionally exploit women.

Swimsuits do have a purpose (you ever try to body surf with clothes on?).

hooters

Postby Dr. Ron » February 27th, 2006, 1:20 pm

steve,
I buy into some of your "fuddy duddy" ideas about propriety but this time I gotta go with Kenya. This is definitely apples and oranges.

One time when I was an overseer, my state youth director was appalled that my boys went to the skating rink. He didn't bother to ask them why they went or if they had an ulterior motive. So, being the concerned person he was, he took them to Pizza Hut to talk some sense into them on how to behave like overseer's kids and set an example.

My boys had gone to the skating party, because they were trying to start a youth bible study and the kids said ," if you guys will come to the birthday party we will come to your study". The place was very well lit and the music was very boring organ music. The boys sat on one side and the girls on the other.

My son waited until they had been severely scolded, and then said to the youth director, "you see that beer on that table, and all those people smoking, and that rock music playing on the juke box?. You brought me to a den of iniquity to scold me for going to a skating party?"

You see Steve, you can quibble all you want, but don't be ignorant about this stuff. Of course we wouldn't take the kids to hooters. We take our Sunday School class there. Kids get to go swimming ............duh!

It's not an invalid comparison. Swimsuits are the self exploiting of women and men. It's not as raunchy, but it's just as sensual -- more so in some ways.

I totally disagree. The difference is that wearing appropriate clothing for the activity (swimwear for swimming) and sitting in a restaurant where women are paraded for pleasure is not anywhere NEAR apples and apples. Swimwear is designed for freedom of movement, water safety and, yes, to emphasize the physical attractiveness of the body. Hooters waitress attire has but one, and only one, function. To draw male attention on the most sexually attractive parts of the female body.

You are shopping at the wrong store, buddy! Here is a picture of a Water Baptism in which I (wearing swim trunks and a baggy T-shirt) baptised a young girl (in her swimsuit and a baggy T-shirt) with the help of a lifeguard because of the severe undertow that day. The Lifeguard is a hunk, I am told, but do you find yourself lusting after the girl… or me? People here swim together, but generally are pretty modest in the way they go about it.

I would like to weigh in on this one.

As a pastor, if I had a youth director that took our kids there, that person would certainly have to find someplace else to minister. He/She would not be allowed to continue under my supervision.

Now lets get to the why...

First, anyone who knows me knows that I am what many in the CoGoP consider liberal. I have no problem with going to restaurants that serve ETOH. Just because they serve it does not mean that you have to consume it.

As for the Hooters, they openly exploit women in a fashion that is not only unGodly, but sub-human. We want to tell our kids that D/R is wrong and if you do that it will send you to hell, while at the same time we teach our young men that the gift God gave us called woman is nothing more than a commodity to be put on display and demeaned.

Not only as a pastor, but as a happily married man Hooters is a place that I simply do NOT belong. To teach young men that it is OK to go to places that puts so little value on women teaches them to have less of a value for a woman at home.

Yes, I know that the women choose to work there, no one forces them to; however, the owners know that the provocative attire and flirtatious attitudes SELL, so they exploit it.

If you want to help the youth group spend time countering the effects of secular media and places like Hooters and teach them that the real beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she does or doesn't wear but in the spirit that is with in. Teach them to place a great value on the gift God gave us men called woman and treat them with honor, dignity, and respect. Teach them this while they are young and impressionable and maybe in the years to come they will be less likely to look at their wives as a possession that if it don't "fit" they can go and try a few others on.

If you haven't guessed, my answer would be NO!

God bless...
Blessings; DJ

Hooters = downtown= 2nd ave north= a few blocks from the GEC

I figured there would be some here at Jude2 that would say a youth group dinner at Hooter's was fine. i remember a thread a good while back where a group had meetings there. i thought the group was supported in their efforts.

The Seattle area has 3.
The menu is the same at all 3 too. I figured I needed to verify that one.

I know a pastor who with his son in law took his son to Hooters to celebrate his 16th birthday.
Then bragged about it at mens retreat to my son in law.

None of us could believe that anyone would take an impressionable young man to such a place ... especially a pastors family. :(
