What was the biggest hit at your table?

Postby Sherry » November 28th, 2008, 6:31 am

So what dish was the biggest hit at your Thanksgiving dinner?

I took my Praline Sweet Potato Casserole and Corn Casserole to my mom's this Thanksgiving. First time sharing these dishes with my side of the family, big hits! The Praline Sweet Potatoes were raved about from everyone, but the biggest honor, my 84 year old grandpa telling me it was the best he ever had!! :)

Was a toss up between the banana pudding and the strawberry jello pudding cake.

Made a few substitutions:

Used Splenda granulated sugar and brown sugar blend, evaporated milk in place of half and half, 1/4 c flour instead of 2 TBS., and I added cinnamon to batter and topping. Yummy!

1st year buying a Mrs. Smith pumpkin pie instead of making my own with Libby's canned pumpkin recipe using a generous amount of pumpkin pie spice...BIG MISTAKE!

My dressing!!! I took dressing so that I knew I would have at least 1 thing that I liked the taste of.

Sweet potatoe hash. We had it in South Carolina last week and my wife came home and fixe it up. Very good.

I'd have a hard time saying, BUT...my aunt put up some sweet corn this summer and we cracked some of that open. Nothing like home-grown, home-stored, and home-cooked vegetables when it's 20 degrees outside.

Corn and butter....no fancy spices, preparations, or bells and whistles and it rocked the table!

DEFINITELY my 28# turkey, this year.

First time I've ever used a brine for it. Won't ever do it any other way from now on!!!

It was the moistest turkey I've ever had, and everyone else agreed.

Now, to find more brine recipes for variations. This year I used a simple one from the Good Eats show and made some of my own modifications to personalize it.

It took a 7.5 gallon bucket to hold that big of a bird and it took 3 gallons of brine to cover it.
God Bless You
