Ever been in a hurricane?

Postby pastorables » September 12th, 2004, 12:18 pm

I experienced Hurricane Erin in 1995 while in Florida. Being in the eye of a hurricane is a unique experience. Has anyone else experienced a hurricane?

I was in Alicia in '83. I had only been in Texas a short time, only 18 years old a city gal from Chicago who had no clue what I was in for!!! My uncle was pastoring the Alvin church at the time. David came and stayed with me at the parsonage, I knew it was love even then. I remember hearing what I thought was trains. Being naive, I asked,"The aren't running trains right now are they?" That's when they finally broke the news to me that tornados were ripping between the parsonage and church....which were really close by the way!!! There was a fig tree there, it was gone after that night.

During the eye I was amazed at the stillness......so weird. Get this, David and my uncle run to the church to check on some folks who were staying there during the storm, then deciding to secure the roof at the time they hopped on the roof to cover a leak!!! Scared me to death! Transformers were exploding everywhere...and then they tell me, "We have another round coming." By then I was ready to go back home!!!!

We made it through, had no electricty for four days, no water....No Fun at all!! That's my story!

I really feel for you all in Flordia and the other areas that have been hit lately. God Bless Ya!

We never experienced the eye, as we were kind of on the side of it- but that's freaky. In the movie A Perfect Storm, the crew of a fishing boat gets caught in a hurricane and is struggling to survive at sea in 50 foot waves. They think they have finally made it outside the storm when they realize to their defeat that they had only entered the eye. That was creepy!

I think that movie's on tv (tonight?) so hope I didn't spoil the end for anyone! It is a pretty good movie.

BTW Ivan is probably not going to affect us! PTL during our prayer meeting Wed Sam felt impressed that it was going to move west and it has. We are thankful, hope it fizzes out in the Gulf.

Yes in Savannah, GA in 86. From the locals, nothing to write home about, but plenty scary to me. Winds howling, trees bending sideways, taping windows. Did it all. The eye is very scary, you think it's over then here it comes again. Don't want anymore. Mountains of Tennessee anyone??

Hurricane Camille

Postby pastorables » September 12th, 2004, 5:34 pm

Hurricane Camille of 1969 is said to be the worst storm ever to hit mainland United States. With winds in excess of 200 mph and tides over 20 feet, Hurricane Camille smashed into the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Sunday night, the 17th of August and continued its devastating path until the early hours of Monday, the 18th.

My dad was in the Mississippi Guard at the time and spent several days of active duty guarding the area after this "Monster" storm. I was only one year old. He has color photos of the clean-up operation that I will post later. Look at the attached radar image of the storm.

Mt ST HELENS!? Get out!! I went "through" it too, from about a hundred miles away. I was ten years old, and remember watching the mushroom cloud grow higher and higher. All the ash blew to the east so we weren't affected too much. :)

There was one more that gave Camille a run for her money:

Camille slammed into the Pass Christian, Mississippi, area with winds gusting to 200 mph and water 24 feet above normal high tide, killing 143 people along the coast from Alabama into Louisiana.

Often called the Labor Day hurricane of 1935, the storm that hit the Keys is considered to be the strongest on record to hit the United States since record-keeping began, according to the National Weather Service.

Paully,

We lived in Tacoma... so we got very little ash. But I can remember people selling the ash in baby food jars at the Flea Market. :)

I moved to Charleston, SC in 1990 - one year after Hurricane Hugo. I've had to evacuate once for Floyd. That was scary.

Right now, we've been fortunate - nothing major since Hugo. Hurricane Charly a couple of weeks ago and the remnants of all the others have affected us but nothing drastic.

Waiting to see what Jeanne does.

Seven of them in two years time, to be precise. When I was on Guam, they were called typhoons, and I went through what was considered to be the worst typhonn to hit the idland up to that time, Typhoon Karen( http://www.pacificworlds.com/guam/land/winds.cfm )There were big red headlines in San Francisco that read "GUAM IS GONE!" the day after she hit, and we were without power and running water for a few weeks afterwards. MY mom invented Spam Stew, cooked over a barbeque, and never heard he end of it.

Before God, I slept through the night Karen passed over Guam. I do not know how;my dad made a tape recording of the storm and it sounded like a freight train was passing by at high speed right outside. We lived in reinforced concrete structures about a foot thick, with aluminum louvres instead of glass for windows and concrete slabs for roofs, and they stood up to the wind and rain like it was nothing. My brother, me, and my sister all three slept right through the whole thing.

We DID get a lot of water on the floors, and that ruined my mom's bamboo carpet, but that was about all we lost. Even dad's car, parked out in the carport, didn't get hit by any of the flying corrugated tin from the large section of quonset huts that were literally wiped off their concrete slabs and hurled through the air like big knives. One small (about a foot square) piece of metal hit the side of the carport and made a small divot in the concrete. We found what we figured was the piece in the backyard, crumpled up like foil.

It got to where we didn't worry about big storms because we had been through so many of them. I still don't get wound up tornados and such as much as I should, probably. Been there, done that, where's the Spam Stew?

Frederic hit Mobile, AL in 1979 and marched on through Alabama. He came on through Birmingham. I lived in the Birmingham area at the time. He was down to a cat. 1 bordering Tropical storm when he hit us. That was pretty scarey for us. When it calmed down we breathed a sigh of relief. The eye only lasted about 20 minutes or so. Then it hit again. The storms went on up through Chattanooga and Cleveland. It was during the assembly. I heard some stories from the assembly. Was anyone there, then?

When I lived in South Korea....not sure if it was monsoon or a hurricane.

All I remember is that we had to run to the Flight Line and tie the F-16s down...

Yes, that was an eventful year.
