Should we Torture Prisoners to Obtain Information??

Postby Russell Roberts » August 25th, 2009, 6:06 am

Yea, right. Can you see Jesus torturing prisoners. Give me a break. Of course not. We should not torture people. It's inhumane.

He killed a fig tree for not having any food for himself on it.

How much more value have many human lives than a fig?

Would Jesus torture anyone? No. He'd tell the person what was in their heart and mind and wouldn't need to ask anyone for the information. We don't have that luxury or power.

The purpose of torture is not to obtain information.
For the truth that lies at the heart of theology is not something there to be discovered, but something, or rather someone, to whom we must surrender. The mystery of faith is not ultimately something that invites our questioning, but something that questions us.

Torture.. real torture? Absolutely not.

But... I have no problem with these... or other constant pressure methods.
• Playing loud music for hours.
• Keeping in a cold room or warm room etc?
• Dark room etc

Let's set real standards for it and then release our intelligence group to do it's job. The term is used loosely for anything that extracts info.

I'm in full support of humane extraction methods for someone intending on harming us.

Depends. I've never seen Jack Bauer do anything I disagreed with.

I may have a large moral lapse here, but I don't have a problem with torturing someone to get information that leads to the capture of terrorists. And by torture, I mean torture.

If the torture proves fruitless, then of course it must be stopped. If a guy loses a few fingers and dozen school kids are saved, c'est la vie.

Dolfan, I agree with the FEELING. I don't think that it is theologically justifiable.

Romans 12:17 says to not repay evil for evil. This is a hard thing when people are killing or witholding info about someone else killing your friends and countrymen. None the less it is what our God demands. I am not saying to roll over and let youself be killed, but I believe there is a way to go about things and that way shouldnt involve evil practices.

But like macuser said, making someone extremely uncomfortable isn't torture in my book.

Which is 'eviller': torture or getting soft on murderers? Torture isn't about retribution, but stopping people from killing innocents. If we cannot act to do that, how do you justify war where killing is the goal?

We should choose life. I leave it to better brains to figure if that's evil.

He already did. He said to pray for the Taliban. Clothe them and give them food. Sound like torture?

The great Theological/philosophical debates

Postby Pastor Gary » August 25th, 2009, 1:03 pm

These are the great Theological/philosophical debates that have raged for centuries;

Telling a lie is wrong. God hates liars. 1942 Germany... you have 12 Jews hidden in your attic, and Nazi soldiers come to your door and ask "Have you any Jews here?" Is the righteous thing to speak truth and send 12 innocents to their death, or to lie to the Nazis and protect the life of the hidden Jews?
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

Feed them but stop them. If they're going to keep killing helping them is abetting them. Which neighbor do you love when you have pick one you are helping to kill? I say stop the one that is a danger to innocents.
