Too risqué?

Postby Pastor Gary » July 17th, 2008, 10:14 pm

We're starting fundraiser this weekend at Reunion, collecting dimes for our charitable ministry, Island Heart. We had this brilliant (??) idea to see how many dimes we could gather between now and our Christmas Party, and we thought "How great would it be if we could collect enough dines that it we laid them edge-to-edge we had a MILE of DIMES??"

17 dimes per 12 inches ($1.70/foot) x 5,280 feet in a mile would be $8,976.00 --- and we could do a lot of good with almost nine grand!

So we started tossing out ideas for promoting the dime drive... someone suggested "Do you give a dime?"

Too risqué?

I don't think so...

...but you gotta consider, I once wrote a short Christmas poem about Shepherds in the field called "Get the Flock Outta Here." :)

Do you really want people's minds to automatically go to a curse when they think of your church and their activities?

It would be memorable but I'm not sure it would be a good thing! :?

When the idea was tossed out, not everyone went there and thought of a profanity... only a few people snickered. But that's what I suspected.

A long time ago when I was doing the youth at my local church, I did a

"if we had a nickle" for everytime you _________, and let them fill in the blank. THEN for 6 months they gave a nickle everytime they did or did not do what they filled in the blank.

One older members was ... for everytime I had the chance to witness and didn't. Another was for every mile he drove and still another was a lady that had to tell her son to sit down and be quiet. We raised a little over 1000 dollars.

Maybe so...

May be a little too risque - especially after Chris' example:)

I like TC's idea; you could change it to say:

"Will (Can) you give a dime every time you ________."

On a side note:
Did you hear the news the other day about the group who broke the Guiness World Record for the Longest line of coins?

http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/adjudications/080716_Longest_line_of_coins.aspx

16 July 2008
On Saturday 12 July 2008, the community of Fort Scott, Kansas, USA completed the longest line of coins measuring 64.88 km (40.32 miles) and consisting of 3,406,234 US 1 cent coins. The event took place in the Fort Scott Middle School parking lot starting on the evening of Tuesday 8th and running through 3 a.m. Saturday morning. The previous record was 55.63 km (34.57 miles) set in Malaysia in 1995. The Guinness World Record attempt was organised by Youth Activities Team and is part of a "Pennies for the Park" fundraiser that YAT has conducted in an effort to raise money for improvements at Ellis Park in Fort Scott.

Hundreds of area residents participated in laying the pennies from early morning till late at night. YAT Co-convener Diana Mitchell attributed the achievement to the community of Fort Scott. ‘I’m so proud of this entire town. This was not just YAT’s win. It was an entire town. What a great day to be living in Fort Scott,’ she said.

Fort Scott should be proud of its community as they had set another record on the previous day by laying one mile of pennies in 2 hours 23 minutes and 1 second. They beat the previous record by just 74 seconds.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Kaoru Ishikawa announced two new world records and presented certificates to the YAT team. Ishikawa praised the community spirit of Fort Scott, ‘I have seen many exciting events since I joined GWR, but joining together of a community for one common goal like this was truly inspirational.’

I say go for it people who get offended at that would be looking for something and you don't need to pander to them

Call me conservative, but I couldn't use it. :) Trust me, there would be many who would immediately make the negative connection.

Example: Without ever having seen the movie, I used to use the line "show me the money" from the pulpit. The teens would always snicker and I didn't have a clue, until one day when the entire scene was playing at Wal-Mart. It was horrific! It taught me a lesson about using phrases or cliches without knowing the origin. :D

I probably wouldn't have made that connection first unless the pretext hadn't been here asking if it was too risque.

I did make the immediate connection of "Brother can you spare a dime?"

Then, because that rhymes with "paradigm", I immediately thought of RamboPreacher!

So, ..... what was the question?!?

Here are a few I used. to get change. I actually found out that eveyone will give change but think twice on the folding stuff.

1. " a penny ain't worth much untill we all work together" everyone gave every penny for 3 months to youth group.

2. " We can make a change with your change" everyone gave all of their chage for 3 months.

I have found out that usually after 3 months people would get bored with something a want a "change"

Back to main topic, it all depends on your people if it might be offensive to some. Some will be offened no matter what you do. Here in Louisville UofL had a Promo for a few years. "L Yes" I had one of the shirts, the local Church people liked it but when I was around others from out in the state they acted offened. Not sure if it was because of the "L" part or that they were kitten fans and the L was for the Ville.

When I clicked on the post I saw the words in bold and thought it was a weird question but my mind didn't go to a cuss word. I read the entire post and then I got it. LOL!! So... it isn't the first thought from someone who's mind does tend to go there.

After reading it... I probably wouldn't use it.

I offer a suggestion...
Change for a change.
You are asking for change for a change instead of bills.
And you are asking for change to make a change in someone's life.

That being said.... take ANY change... you can turn it to dimes to continue your thought and goal. If you just ask for dimes then you could limit your donations.

The penny idea and beating the World Record is something a lot of people would want to get involved in. I would seriously consider that! Who doesn't want to make the GBWR???
