Pastor Don wrote:...While I agree with your statement that everyone has a gift, I do not believe that is the same as being allowed to use one of the Gifts of the Spirit. Each person is gifted in a special way by God to be used in the church; however, not everyone is given one of the 9 Gifts of the Spirit.
But Don, that presupposes that that list of 9 is intended to be an exhaustive list, and I don't believe that. There are probably a dozen ways to categorize or define spiritual gifts, but here's the one I have adopted (flawed though it may be):
I believe there are AT LEAST 20 or 21 spiritual gifts described in scripture, and actually a lot that are suggested but not named. I divide the listed ones into one of three categories...
Motivation Gifts
Ministry Gifts
Manifestation Gifts
I derive these lists from 3 passages:
In
Romans 12:6-8 I read "We have (sounds personally possessive to me!) different gifts, according to the grace given us (Given us as individuals I think). If a man's gift is
prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is
serving, let him serve; if it is
teaching, let him teach; if it is
encouraging, let him encourage; if it is
contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is
leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is
showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully."
Out of that passage I see:
Prophesying
Serving
Teaching
Encouraging
Contributing (Giving)
Leadership
Mercy
Then I flip over to
Ephesians 4:12 and pick up...
"It was he who gave some to be
apostles, some to be
prophets, some to be
evangelists, and some to be
pastors and teachers,..."
Out of that passage I see:
Apostle
Prophet
Evangelist
Pastor
Teacher (or some say Pastor/Teacher as a single unit)
The third passage is
1st Corinthians 12:8-10, in which we pick up "To one there is given through the Spirit the
message of wisdom, to another the
message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another
faith by the same Spirit, to another
gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another
miraculous powers, to another
prophecy, to another
distinguishing between spirits, to another
speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the
interpretation of tongues.
Out of that passage I see:
Message (word) of wisdom
Message (word) of knowledge
Faith
Gifts of Healing
Miraculous Powers (Miracles)
Prophecy
Distinguishing between spirits (Discernment)
Tongues
Interpretation of Tongues
I think there is also a valid argument that can be made that the scriptures suggest other gifts... Exhortation, Missionary, Administration, Voluntary Poverty, Celibacy, Exorcism, etc.
In my view, Motivation and Ministry Gifts are assigned or given to individuals in the church for the good of all, while Manifestation Gifts may or may not be more temporary in nature, being manifested in any individual God chooses for that moment... though I see exceptions to that at least experientially. I know people God seems to often use to heal specific diseases, yet they have little/no success praying for anything else.
Pastor Don wrote:The idea that being a pastor is a gift, I do tend to question. It is a calling one receives from God into servant-hood, which requires an anointing to be effective. Without the anointing it is simply oration, visitation, or motivation. There are great orators that can stand behind a pulpit and bring wonderful points out, that simply can not move ones spirit, at the same time there are those who seem to lack the ability to carry on a conversation yet when they stand in the pulpit can bring about the needed results. In fact I wonder if, at times, the calling to be a pastor is not more a curse than a gift...
Can you see how the phrase used in Romans 11:29 ("The gifts and calling of God are without repentance..." KJV / "For God's gift and his call are irrevocable...") might tie gifts/callings into a single package?
