gifts

Postby Full Quiver » March 31st, 2011, 5:23 pm

Do you know anyone that has the gift of giving? I believe we all do. I think it's a gift that we largely overlook. We expect everyone to be givers but we don't expect everyone to be prophets, teachers, or leaders. Sure we give what we can but some just have the gift to give and no doubt the gift to get.

I think there is some misunderstanding, at least from my theological perspective.

I expect that anyone can have any of the gifts (as the Holy Spirit imparts). but to walk in a role that is of the giver, would be the same as walking in the role of a prophet, etc. - not for everyone.

the gift is not the same as being in the role as.

I'm probably right there with you Rambo, I prefer not to even use the term "gifts" because it implies it's something given to keep.

I am not a healer, but the Spirit has manifested healing through me, I am not a prophet, but the Spirit has prophesied through me, etc. I see red flags when people start claiming those types of roles.

More directly to this particular question, I believe as God created and shaped us as people, some are more apt to give, just as some are more adept at other talents (music, art, logic, empathy, etc.) and God uses those traits in us for His purpose as well. I have been very blessed by "givers" who God has used in my life, and yes I have known some who are "gifted" in this way similar to others are gifted in music, it just comes naturally to them and flows freely from them.

I don't know if that answered the question or not.

the Bible could not be more clear that manifestations of the holy spirit are gifts given to the believer....

1 Cor 12:1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit...

1 Cor 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts...

and that...1 Cor 12:7 ...to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (is given is in the present passive tense- meaning it is continuously given)

The same concept found in Romans 11:29... for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable

It is also clear that each and every gift
is not given to each and every believer:

1 Cor 12:27-20 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[d]?

In Romans 12:7-8 the Bible instructs us that if our gift ...is giving, then give generously

God Bless You- Sam Smith
Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? (Jesus)

Would you call yourself a pastor or evangelist? How about teacher? How about child of God or Christian?

Pastor Sam quotes the scriptures well..No question that the operating of the gifts are operated by the Spirit..but they are indeed gifts. Eph 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Why are you afraid of someone claiming that they were given the gift of Healing? The scripture surely tells us that it is GIVEN to men but Operated by the HOLY SPIRIT, and according to I Cor 14 are under the control of the Believer.

Also to equate the GIFTS given by the HOLY SPIRIT, to what can be a natural talent or learned attribute such as music, art, logic ect...at the least places our ability at the same level as the working of the Holy Spirit. Then it is little wonder that we see lilttle if any miracle manifestations in the local church today.

As to a person wearing a name plate indicating his/her being used in a particular gifting, I would agree that that is overboard. The giftings and the offices are functions within the body of Christ.

The gifts are given to manifest the Body of Christ on earth..( I Cor. 12:12-14,27).
The gifts are given to assist the evangelization of the world. (Mark 16)
The gifts are given to edify the church. (I Cor. 14:3,12,26)
The gifts are given for the deliverence of God's people and the perfecting of the saints. (Eph. 4:14)

I function in the Office of an Apostle..I do not wear a name plate nor do I go around using the title. But I know my calling, and was functioning in it long before I realized it. It is the function that God has given me in the Body.

Those who operate in the gift of giving, which is not just a natural inclination to be a good oh boy, but those who place to goal of the Church and the great commission above their own desire. A supernatural ability God given to make and distribute Gods wealth for kingdom purposes.
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.

Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, [let us prophesy] according to the proportion of faith;

Rom 12:7 Or ministry, [let us wait] on [our] ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;

Rom 12:8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, [let him do it] with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
What we need here is a good revival! lol

I understand that, and Yes I know in those aspects that the term gift is used and yes they are given, but (as I said) the scripture also uses other terms, and in I Corinthians 12:7 I believe there is more emphasis on the term "manifestation" being that the Spirit is the one doing the work, not that these things are within our abilities or "giftings" but are the work of the Spirit through us.

I think it's important that we keep the focus on the one doing the work, and not get so prideful about "our gifts"

that was my point.
