The day of Pentecost

Postby beckrl » June 18th, 2009, 8:50 am

The book of Acts records that on that day "Pentecost" which is the seventh sunday or the 49th day.
In reference to this scripture is it telling us that it was 50 days from the resurrection of Christ that the Holy Spirit decended upon the apostles are that day was infact the Old Testament festival?

It was called the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), and in the Old Testament was originally an agricultural festival celebrating and giving thanks for the "first fruits" of the early spring harvest (Lev 23, Exod 23, 34).
Being 50 "Pentecost" days after Passover.

What day was Jesus then on the cross? On Passover are day(s)after? Then if after Passover does that make that day of the decending of the Holy Spirit some days less than 50?

Actually it was the first Sunday after the seventh Saturday, making it the 50th day. And you begin counting sabbaths after Passover.

Jesus was crucified on Passover evening. The first day of unleavend bread was a holy convocation -- a Sabbath (though not the weekly sabbath). That week there were 2 "sabbaths:" the weekly sabbath and the first day of unleavened bread. Jesus would have given up the ghost around Wednesday evening, and Thursday was the first day of unleavend bread. Then He arose after sundown on Saturday. He tell Mary Magdalene not to touch him because he had not yet ascended to his father and her father, his God and her God. But later he was touched. This was because Mary had been at his death and was unclean and would have made Him unclean under the law. But He, as high priest, had to wave the wave sheaf before the Lord (those that were resurrected after him Matt. 27:52-53.) Jesus didn't abide with them the full 40 days, but came in and out among them. The first week, there were 8 days between visits.

Two wave loaves were to be presented to God on the 50th day (Pentecost): representing the firstfruits Jew and Gentile. The 120 in the upper room were a wave loaf.

Also, under the law, a male child and his mother were unclead for 40 days after his birth. Jesus was "begotten from the dead." After 40 days, he ascended to heaven, and told the disciples to wait for the promise. That is because the 40 days of separation had ended, being counted from His resurrection.

Why do we account for his burial on wednesday evening? When Luke 23:54 tells us it was the day of preparation which is friday before the sabbath.
Do we try to account for the three days (72 hours) when it tells us "on the third day" Which is Sunday the first day of the week. Luke 24:1

Mat 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

Mark 16:2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Anyway back to the pentecost part, On the day Jesus was crucified was it Passover and then 50 days later the promise of the Holy Spirit on the day of pentecost. It would make his deciples without him only about 10 day.
Is that right?

1) Yes, they were without him only about 10 days.

2) If He wasn't in the grave 3 days and 3 nights, then Jesus was a liar, because the only sign He promised the pharisees would not have been true. "But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12:39-40)

It doesn't say it was Friday, it says it was the preparation for the Sabbath.

Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day [is] the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work [therein]: it [is] the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. These [are] the feasts of the LORD, [even] holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. In the fourteenth [day] of the first month at even [is] the LORD'S passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month [is] the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. (Leviticus 23:3-7)

That week: 2 holy convocations, 2 sabbath days. We know that he was up Sunday "a great while before day"

I was'nt sure about the 10 days because of what day Jesus was crucified on. I know he was with them until 40 days after is resurrection, then only 10 days remain unto pentecost. Taken that Christ rose on the first day of the week, Sunday. "And you begin counting sabbaths after Passover."

Was the day Christ was crucified the day of Passover? If it was then that would be less than 10 days. Would it not?

I'll have to look at that again

Hmmm... I would say that he was crucified on Passover. I understand that the counting isn't from Passover, but from the Sabbath after Passover, you begin to count "seven full sabbaths" or seven full weeks AFTER the Sabbath following Passover. That would let the 10 days work out.

8)

Either way (not to hijack the thread) we're looking at 10 days or less. For those who think that the Apostles made a mistake in the ordination of Matthias, that would mean that the Apostles fouled everything up in a week (more or less) between Jesus' ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. I would have to view the short time as proof that they did so according to God's will.

The preparation day is on what number day the 14th Nisan or the 15th Nisan?
NIGHT of the 14th Friday: We must take into account that Jesus eat the 1st day unleavened meal with his deciples. Then services the Lord Supper and Christ arrested in Gethsemane and put on trial.
Day of the 14th:The Passover Lamb is slain in the evening (afternoon),Crucifixion and burial before sundown (about the ninth hour 3pm)the women prepare spices.
All of this is on the 14th the day of perparation, Friday

15 Nisan
Saturday - 7th day Sabbath
NIGHT
Rested
DAY

16 Nisan Sunday

NIGHT of the 16th
Resurrection before sunrise
Tomb discovered to be empty just before sunrise, about 3am
The 16th begun at sunset.

I hope we see the filfullment in Christ as our passover lamp which is on the 14th Nisan the evening offering.

That would account for three days and three nights.

But the sign is for him to be "in the belly of the earth" for three days and three nights, not just doing stuff in relationship to his death. If it had said merely, "three days," we could maybe claim some idiomatic expression at play, making parts of days equal to one day and allowing somehow for 2 nights and a day to fulfill the requirement. But in that he said three days and three nights requires just that for the prophecy to be fulfilled.

I'm not sure, but it maybe as simple as Passover - 14th
Feast of Unleavened Bread - 15th and First Day of the week - 16th

  No man that wasn't me. :D

But I have thought of the Old Testament and the use of the "Third Day" and "Three Days"

2 Chronicles 10:
5And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.

In Luke 24:
1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done.

That first day of the week (Sunday) started at sunset, and Jesus was gone from the grave when the women viewed the grave very early in the morning.

The Sabbath was from 6pm sunset Friday to 6pm to 6pm sunset Saturday. The first day of the week from sunset 6pm Saturday to sunset 6pm Sunday

Given note that the Jews count the evening to morning and can be change by the sunsetting. Luke 24:44 Tells that about the sixth hour (noon to 3pm) darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour(3pm to sunset)
Jesus was then place in the grave onthe perparation day.
