Sausage, Applesauce/Potato Casserole

Postby rjc » October 14th, 2008, 4:08 pm

Ground sausage (Any brand you prefer - I like Jimmy Dean)
Mashed potatoes
Thick sliced sweet onions
Unsweetened applesauce

In a skillet saute the onions in butter and put aside, brown the sausage completely and drain.
Prepare mashed potatos (I like to use homemade but you can use instant but be sure to make them with butter)

In a deep casserole dish layer mashed potatoes, sausage, onions, applesauce, mashed potatoes, sausage, onions, applesauce, etc. End with a layer of mashed potatoes.

Bake in a 350 degree oven until potatoes brown.

This is great on a wet or cold day with salad and/or soup and hot biscuits.

This sounds wonderful...except for the applesauce. I don't like applesauce.

Can I make it without the applesauce or is it really needed?
There never was a horse that couldn't be rode and there never was a cowboy that couldn't be throwed.

You can make without the applesauce, it will change the flavor a little but it should still be good. I think I might try using crushed pineapples and see how that tastes.

Sounds good!!! I don't know about the applesauce, but I'll give it a try!

If the applesauce doesn't go over well, I'm thinking LOTS of cheddar cheese!
