Avatar Help - What am I doing wrong?

I keep trying to upload a new avatar and after I deleted the old one, I can't save one small enough to upload properly. How do I do that? Thanks in advance.

The software has changed (a lot) since the board went dormant. We are all in a learning curve. My photo is SERIOUSLY out of date.
