Videos from Radical U this past Friday

Postby dolfan » March 19th, 2012, 6:31 am

This past Friday night we were honored with the worship and song of two friends of mine, Rod Wallace and Larry Smith. I met Larry at University of North Alabama in 1992; he was an older student and we were both communications majors. I knew in his earlier life he was a hippie (self-described) but had no idea of his musical background (which he never really talked about). We were good study friends and did some class projects together. We lost touch after 1994 until about 2001 or so. He is over all of the IT stuff for the local school system where I live.

Rod Wallace was, for the past 2 years before I quit lessons, my guitar instructor. We spent more than half of our time testifying to each other -- that's one reason I decided to quit the lessons. But, it was my fault because I LOVED it. It was cheap encouragement as far as I'm concerned! I have come to just love this man like a brother. Rod teaches guitar constantly. He has over 40 students in our little town.

When Rod and I were talking during lessons, I found out that he (and Rod is around 60 or so, as Larry is) had gone back to school and -- to my surprise -- had gotten his communications degree at UNA just as Larry and I had done. He was there in the late 1990s after we'd graduated. AND, I learned that he and Larry are best friends and have been for 40 years. What a hoot!!

Long enough story making short: Here are some YouTube links to a few of their songs from Friday night as our guests at Radical U. Their testimonies of lives in the 1970s drug culture as musicians (Rod has played for many famous artists, as did Larry, while living in Texas in the 1970s) were so abundant and scriptural that I let that stand as our bible lesson for Friday night. Just really well done. Too long a clip (20 minutes of their testimonies) to post on YouTube, though, or at least that's what the YouTube thing said on my iPad screen when I tried to post it up.

Listen to Rod's playing. These 2 guys aren't the BEST vocalists, but if you like your music a little rough around the edges, sort of raw, anyway, as I do, you'll really like this. Especially a treat for me was "Jesus Broke the Wild Horse". Gerald, I think you probably know this song and I think you'd probably like it if you haven't. (Flying Burrito Bros. did it.) The lyrics and then Rod's performance on the guitar were amazing. He played a Godin very much like this one (http://www.themusiczoo.com/product/3155 ... r-Natural/). Made it talk.

Oh, listen for yourself. My thanks to these guys for their friendship and their witness and their willingness.

Larry sings "Jesus Broke The Wild Horse". http://t.co/1Ri6gIy6

"I Give Myself Away". http://t.co/acZElt6H (The guy who leads our men's challenge group for RU leaned to me after this song and said, "If people in our church could hear this, they'd pack this place out." Not for everyone's tastes, but I think my friend Jim and I have similar tastes because I agreed!)
Human government bears the same relation to hell as the church bears to heaven. (David Lipscomb, On Civil Government, 72).
