Billy?????

Postby stevenson » March 1st, 2008, 9:45 am

Dear Sir, I have been installing sound systems for years and have worked with some very popular artist and I'm hardly ever stumped. But today I am stumped! We have a church in our region that just moved into a nice new building with a PA system already there. The person who had the church built had a professinal put in the sound system. What he put in for speakers are the "JBL Control 29AV Professional". On the back it is wired as such......on the left bottom it says 100V Line and five channels
Channel 5 Thru
Channel 4 Do not use
Channel 3 100W
Channel 2 55W
Channel 1 28W

On the right 70V Line
Channel 1 14W
Channel 2 28W
Channel 3 55W
Channel 4 110W
Channel 5 Thru

It looks more like a personal address system for like a school or shopping center rather than a church sound system.

There's a long story on the history of this church that i don't want to get into. But one of our Spanish churches took it over and I'd like to help them out. They want to know if the can plug their mixer into this amp and use these speakers????????????

The Quick Answer is I Dunno!!.

But I have resources that will .

Let me send out a question and will get back with you.

But my first guess is like you. The speakers are for an inhouse Muzak public annoucement system.

If it is that then I doubt plugging into there amps will work.

Question.. What kind of Mixer do they have. Is it a powered or nonpowered.

What kind of Amp is the speakers attached to now.?

I haven't seen the amp yet. But I know they have a Behringer Eurodesk SL3242FX-PRO 32-channel Mixer with Digital Effects. How do I know? Cuz I have the exact same board. I'll see if I can get some info on the amp. Thanks!!!

Below are some comments I have gotten on your request.

Some of it we where already guessing.

Maybe some of it will help. Or give you more questions to ask.

That series is usually used for background music systems, paging, etc.
(restaurant, retail, etc.) The numbers are just selectable wattage
transformer taps. Without knowing the amp, it's hard to say if they're set
up using a tap, or just the 8 ohm thru selection. While they're generally a
good sounding speaker, they can't really get all that loud. I wouldn't want
to put a comtemporary worship team through them.

According to what I looked at those speakers will also take a standard
8 ohm speaker level input as well. So like you said I don't know
either. I suspect that the system was designed for speech, we know
nothing about the size of the room, know how many speakers and how
they are arranged, and we know nothing of the amp.

My first reaction is that they should be able to with a caveat. The
caveat being what type of program material are they going to be
sending through the amps/speakers? If its mostly voice with someone
singing to a track tape or CD, shouldn't be a problem. But a worship
band, probably not.

Russel responds:

Billy:

What your friend is seeing here is the internal transformer tap settings for the individual loudspeakers. Most common is the 70.7 volt system which allows the use of multiple loudspeakers from the same amplifier channel up to the maximum output wattage of the power amplifier channel.

For example if your friend has four JBL Control 29AV loudspeakers and they are all set for the 55 watt taps, a 250 watt per channel power amplifier would be reasonable.

You should be able to plug any reasonable mixer into the amplifiers and produce sound.

The question should be are the loudspeaker adequate for the size and audience coverage in your friend's room?

Since these loudspeakers are more aptly used as background/foreground music loudspeakers, they do not play all that loud, will not perform well in a very reverberant church and I would not expect the listener to be more than
15-20' from each loudspeaker!

Worship styles and volumes will all have an impact on how successful these speakers will have for the new church occupant.

The bottom line to an answer, "it all depends on your friend's style of worship, the space in which the system is installed, and how loud does it gott'a go!"
