What I read about this was that they were secretly developing the high school scenario reboot to follow Spider Man 4 since they figured that would be the last they could get the same cast. When problems started with 4, they just moved ahead with the reboot.
I remember being so disappointed with 3 but I watched it the other night and I thought it was great. Maybe my expectations have changed.
